Our Story

For nearly a century, this corner of downtown Norwich was connected to the automobile. Cadillacs, Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles and GMC trucks were sold here. People came downtown to buy their first car, trade in their old one, talk shop—and probably spend a little more than they planned.

For us, the connection runs a little deeper.

This place was part of our childhood. Our father spent part of his career at the dealership that once stood here, and as kids, we walked through those doors with him. At the time, it was simply a familiar part of growing up in Norwich. We never imagined that decades later, we would return to the same site to create something of our own.

When it came time to imagine The Principle, we knew we didn’t want to build just another hotel. We wanted to create something with a sense of place—something with history, personality and absolutely no interest in being ordinary. Not a hotel designed to look like hundreds of others, but one with an identity entirely its own.

The site’s automotive past gave us plenty to work with. The confidence, craftsmanship and style of the 1930s and ’40s became part of the inspiration. Vintage automobiles became art. Materials, details and unexpected touches throughout the hotel offer subtle references to what once stood here, while the hotel itself looks firmly toward what comes next.

We set out to create the kind of place we wished was already here. Somewhere you’d be proud to recommend to an out-of-town guest, meet friends for dinner, stop in for coffee, have a drink, or head upstairs to the rooftop simply because you can.

There’s something special about creating the future on a place that was part of your past.

A century ago, people came to this site looking for something that would take them somewhere.

We like to think they still do.
